Maureen Ryan Named to the Silicon Valley Business Journal’s
Women of Influence List
Kukuza’s vice president heralded for her pioneering role in cannabis accounting & finance
Newark, Calif., May 22, 2020—Maureen Ryan, a vice president at Kukuza Associates and its parent company, RoseRyan, has been honored as an influential woman by the Silicon Valley Business Journal. The media outlet announced its list of 100 notable women today, profiling them online and in print, and Ryan was recognized for her pioneering work in cannabis accounting and finance.
“Working in cannabis has certainly been a career highlight,” says Ryan, who spearheaded RoseRyan’s entrance into the cannabis marketplace and then launched the consulting firm’s dedicated cannabis subsidiary, Kukuza Associates, last year.
“We knew that canna companies would need the same level of finance acumen and accounting knowledge to grow and scale so that’s why we entered the field more than five years ago. It’s been an interesting and rewarding journey, and we’ve found a community of like-minded businesspeople in cannabis. I want to thank everyone who’s been on our cannabis team—it’s a true delight today to be found among all the amazing women on this list!” she adds.
Pioneering Cannabis Accounting and Finance
A business veteran and proponent of women’s rights, Ryan started leading RoseRyan, a traditional finance and accounting consulting firm, into the cannabis marketplace in 2014. She soon realized that there was a dearth of business providers for growing cannabis companies, so she and a colleague built an ecosystem of trusted business partners. Today, the robust network offers Kukuza clients a wide range of services, including tax, legal, valuation, payroll and marketing, to hurdle them toward milestones.
When California voters passed landmark legislation in 2016, legalizing the adult use of recreational marijuana, she accelerated RoseRyan’s commitment to the field, growing its team while refining its offerings and ecosystem. In 2016, RoseRyan joined the National Cannabis Industry Association, a leading association for the legal marketplace, and, in 2017, it created thought leadership specifically for cannabis companies to relay the benefits of proactive finance and accounting strategy and planning.
Kukuza Associates: Solely Focused on Cannabis Accounting and Finance
In March 2019, Ryan’s efforts culminated in the establishment of Kukuza Associates, a RoseRyan company, which solely focuses on cannabis companies. Kukuza means “growth” and “potential” in Swahili, capturing the essence of how the cannabis consulting firm propels clients ahead.
With a headcount of 15, Kukuza now works with a range of cannabis clients across the western U.S., including a regional extraction laboratory, a large cultivator, an investor group and a vertically integrated company.
It also offers a rapid assessment that provides feedback on a company’s financial and operational health. In about two hours, a canna business learns if it has what it takes to efficiently scale, attract investment or meet other goals. Cannabis companies receive a dashboard from the assessment that rates their readiness across 16 dimensions identified by the firm as critical to overall success.
Ryan has been featured by the National Cannabis Industry Association and published on its blog for her thoughts about women in the field. She’s also appeared in Accounting Today and periodically contributes to Cannabis Business Executive.
Before joining RoseRyan in 2000, Ryan was a sales account executive at Nortel Networks, marketing manager at Bay Networks and sales operations manager at Quantum Corp. As an R&D engineering program manager at General Dynamics, she was responsible for landing a $20 million government contract for the development of a next generation missile system.
She holds a BS in aeronautics from San Jose State University and an MBA from San Diego State University. Ryan resides in San Jose.
