Philanthropist MacKenzie Scott has donated millions to nearly 80 California-based nonprofit organizations – and one of them is right here in the Central Valley.

The organization Scott donated to is called “Shine Together,” which helps young mothers break the cycle of generational poverty. They received $2 million from Scott.

MacKenzie Scott donates millions to nearly 80 organizations in California

Scott, who helped grow and establish Amazon alongside Jeff Bezos, pledged to donate half of her wealth, which Forbes estimates to be $365 billion.

Vanessa Padilla, an advocate for Shine Together, says was a teen parent herself and says being a part of this program had a positive impact on her.

“Coming into this program, I learned a lot about being more mindful of taking judgment,” Padilla said. “We talked about this in the group and said let’s not reciprocate what people are giving to you.”

The Fresno Regional Director of Shine Together, Sarah Villa, says the $2 million grant will help them develop strategic plans, increase invisibility and help them reach young parents.

Villa says the grant will help deepen the work and the capacity to support more young mothers in the Fresno community. It will also help them improve their health and wellness for themselves and their children.

RoseRyan, a ZRG company that recently celebrated its 30th year in business, has been named one of the 2023 Best Firms for Women and for Equity Leadership by the Accounting and Financial Women’s Alliance (AFWA) and Accounting MOVE Project.

The recognition occurred on the heels of RoseRyan being awarded a Top Workplaces 2023 honor for the ninth consecutive year by San Francisco Bay Area Top Workplaces, due to the finance and accounting consulting firm’s collaborative environment, values and ethics, and overall strategic direction.

“Anytime our firm’s culture and leadership are recognized, it’s gratifying, especially when the need for strong finance and accounting talent is so great for all types of organizations,” said Kathy Ryan, Chair of RoseRyan, which she founded in 1993. “We offer a unique environment for finance professionals who love variety and challenges, yet also want balance in their lives.”

The Best CPA Firms for Equity Leadership list recognizes firms with at least 31 percent women partners and principals; RoseRyan has 57 percent. The Accounting MOVE Project is the only annual benchmarking project that both counts and advocates for women in the profession. Its just released report recognized RoseRyan’s commitment to career sustainability, through skill-building opportunities and cross-functional experiences, along with increasing accessibility to leadership. RoseRyan “is showing how to create a firm of the future,” the organization reported.

“When options abound, women want to work for firms that appreciate their talents and give them opportunities to advance at a pace that fits with the rest of their lives,” said Cindy Stanley, Executive Director of the Accounting and Financial Women’s Alliance. “That’s why programs like the Accounting MOVE Project are so important to identify firms that have a history of women in leadership and offer flexible career options.”

Campbell, CA., October 20, 2021 – RoseRyan, a leading provider of accounting and financial professionals/solutions for a multitude of sectors, today announced that it’s on this year’s Accounting & Financial Women’s Alliance (AFWA) Best Firms for Equity Leadership.

“We greatly appreciate and take pride in the distinction of being named by the Accounting and Financial Women’s Alliance as one of the best firms in our industry for equity leadership for women,” said Kathy Ryan, Founder and Chair of RoseRyan.

“We are a woman-founded company and from our start in 1993, RoseRyan has always been a workplace where females can thrive and achieve their professional goals.”

The pandemic provided RoseRyan with business emerging from unexpected directions, which enabled the company to accelerate leadership for rising women. Additionally, the accessibility of mentoring via virtual platforms was particularly important to equipping those newly minted leaders with strategies for success.

The Best Firms for Equity Leadership list is based on MOVE survey results and recognizes firms with at least 30 percent women partners and principals, as roughly a third is the widely recognized ‘tipping point’ for members of any identity group to have individual impact. The Equity Leadership list recognizes firms that have achieved that milestone through any combination of culture, programs, initiatives, and growth.

According to the Accounting MOVE Project, firms that entered the COVID-19 pandemic with established modes of remote work intended primarily to benefit women had a compelling advantage in the abrupt shift to remote work. With women leading many aspects of virtual business development, firms continued to promote women to senior leadership: this year, women comprise 32 percent of partners and principals at the firms that participate in the Accounting MOVE Project, up from 29 percent in 2020. Based on the report, women continue to make up just over half of total firm employees (55 percent).

The list, sponsored by the AFWA, is based on each year’s MOVE results. To earn a spot on the list, an employer must have both a proportionate number of women at most or all levels of management and proven success with the MOVE factors. The 2021 Accounting MOVE Project is available at the Accounting & Financial Women’s Alliance website https://www.afwa.org/move-project/.

About the Accounting MOVE Project

The Accounting MOVE Project is based on the MOVE methodology, developed by

research partner Wilson-Taylor Associates, Inc., which investigates the factors proven to be essential to women’s career success:

M – Money: fair pay practices;

O – Opportunity: advancement and leadership development;

V – Vital supports: work-life programs that remove barriers;

E – Entrepreneurship: operating experience for managing or business ownership

The company secured a sought-after position on this winning workplaces list after its employees took part in the Group’s annual confidential survey that measures 15 workplace engagement drivers, including attributes such as leadership, innovation, open-mindedness and purpose.

The response rate by RoseRyan staff on the survey was 86%, and the results were published during August 2021 in Bay Area News Group supplements distributed throughout the region.

Reflecting on receiving this honor once more, Dave Roberson, RoseRyan CEO says, “Each year since 2015 RoseRyan firm has won this award by receiving consistently high ratings from its staff. Newark, Calif., August 24, 2020—RoseRyan, a leading advisory firm that helps companies of all kinds—large and small—master their finances, has been awarded a 2020 Top Workplaces honor by The Bay Area News Group. This is the sixth year that the finance and accounting firm has made the Top 100 list.

The Top Workplaces list is based on the results of confidential employee surveys. Published yesterday in Bay Area News Group supplements found throughout the region, the Top 100 list evaluates workplace engagement based on 15 drivers.

Says Dave Roberson, CEO of RoseRyan, “At RoseRyan, we’re excited to be again on this list of winning workplaces—it reflects the positive atmosphere that we’re so proud of and springs from our strong culture. We believe that when everyone thrives, that’s when the magic happens.”

RoseRyan employees rated the firm highly for attributes such as purpose, innovation, leadership and open-mindedness. The survey’s response rate was 77%.

About the Survey

The Top 100 list is based solely on employee feedback gathered through a third-party survey administered by Energage LLC, a leading provider of technology-based employee engagement tools. The anonymous survey measures several aspects of workplace culture, including alignment, execution and connection.

Says Eric Rubino, Energage CEO, “In times of great change, it is more important than ever to maintain a connection among employees.”

Roberson adds that RoseRyan’s strong culture, based on the values identified 10 years ago, has allowed the firm to quickly adapt to the coronavirus crisis. The firm “didn’t miss a beat” when the shelter-in-place orders happened.

According to Roberson, RoseRyan’s tight culture, regular communication channels, and robust tech stack helped the firm quickly adjust to working and managing remotely. Going forward, he adds, the RoseRyan culture will continue to sustain the advisory firm as it weathers the new normal.

Founder Kathy Ryan Remains Chair, Vice President Roberson Named CEO

Newark, Calif., December 3, 2019 — One year after joining RoseRyan as Vice President, David “Dave” Roberson will lead RoseRyan as CEO effective January 1. Roberson, a seasoned executive who led Hitachi Data Systems as CEO, is also the chief executive of RoseRyan subsidiary Kukuza Associates.

Kathy Ryan will transition from CEO to Chair while retaining ownership of the Silicon Valley finance and accounting consulting firm she co-founded 26 years ago.

In addition, Ryan will continue to work with clients in the field, play a large role in RoseRyan’s strategic planning and investments, and serve as Director of Bizinta, a SaaS company spun out of RoseRyan that provides a business management solution to consulting firms.

Says Ryan about the change, “Dave is a strong leader — he’s ready to lead RoseRyan as we reach for the next stage of growth, and he’s the right person to take us there. He’s extremely well versed in what makes RoseRyan unique and has a strong foundation to make it happen.”

Adds Ryan, “I’m keen to hand Dave the reins, and for RoseRyan clients, this shift in leadership roles will be seamless, given how closely we’ve worked together since Dave became part of the team.”

The Right C-suite Talent at the Right Time for RoseRyan

Roberson joined RoseRyan last January as Vice President after leading RoseRyan’s execution of the Transition Services Agreement in DigiCert’s purchase of Symantec’s web security business—RoseRyan’s largest engagement to date. In March, when RoseRyan launched Kukuza Associates, a new subsidiary that concentrates solely on the cannabis market, Roberson was named its CEO, a role he retains.

“I’m excited to lead the next chapter of RoseRyan. Our outstanding reputation, strong client base of happy, repeat customers who refer us to others, along with our defined values, are building blocks for more success,” says Roberson.

He continues, “We’ll be propelling growth across the firm’s solution areas, and we’re well positioned, given the meaningful culture and brand that Kathy and the team have created and fostered over the years. What continues to impress me about RoseRyan is its clear strengths as well as the can-do attitudes and operational savviness that our consultants bring to every engagement. The value delivered to clients is striking.”

During his time at RoseRyan, Roberson has overseen the firm’s broad array of finance and accounting solutions. Part of this oversight included developing its “rapid diagnostic” concept, which involves quickly assessing a company’s financial readiness for growth and scaling. The diagnostic tool was launched by Kukuza and then rolled out in September by RoseRyan’s Emerging Growth area.

Possessing extensive consulting and board experience as well as a law degree, Roberson was a senior vice president at HP and worked at Hitachi for 26 years. He likes to joke that he has held every C-suite title that exists.

Currently chairman of the board of Push Technology, a global API management company, he also enjoys mentoring a wide range of professionals, from budding managers to CEOs, in his free time.
